Basically, it has to be tripod-mountable and computer-friendly. I'd really like to avoid any funky a/v hookups, too.
http://videowtf.com/questions/90/what-camcorder-for-streaming-video/91#91 Answer by bob for What camcorder for streaming video bob 2009-10-08T01:34:16Z 2009-10-08T01:34:16Z
Something that has USB2 Streaming capability or Firewire output. I like Panasonic myself, try canon as well. a good Lapel mic is handy too.
http://videowtf.com/questions/90/what-camcorder-for-streaming-video/93#93 Answer by Dean for What camcorder for streaming video Dean 2009-10-08T01:35:48Z 2009-10-08T01:35:48Z
Yeah, or an older Sony handycam with firewire or usb2 output... this stuff has all gotten pretty user friendly.
http://videowtf.com/questions/90/what-camcorder-for-streaming-video/206#206 Answer by unknown (google) for What camcorder for streaming video unknown (google) 2009-10-08T19:08:30Z 2009-10-08T19:08:30Z
What's an example of a camera with USB2 Streaming? I was hoping that my canon vixia hf s100 would support this, but it (and most other flash-based camcorders) don't seem to. The key is a live stream (for something like Ustream etc), but it seems like you need to go with a tape-based camera with firewire out to get this.
http://videowtf.com/questions/90/what-camcorder-for-streaming-video/210#210 Answer by Rich Reader for What camcorder for streaming video Rich Reader 2009-10-08T19:39:07Z 2009-10-08T19:39:07Z
I've been getting good results with my Sony HDR-HC9 running in SD mode out the firewire to my laptop. The biggest obstacle to livestreaming is having enough bandwidth to upload from the field. My Sprint PCS USB EVDO modem includes 5GB data transfer per month, and frequently dumps my stream when the data rate drops below 200Kbps for more than a few seconds. Some Verizon people claim that their 3G is readily available at higher transfer rates, and doesn't have a transfer limitation.
http://videowtf.com/questions/90/what-camcorder-for-streaming-video/438#438 Answer by Brian for What camcorder for streaming video Brian 2009-10-19T14:13:18Z 2009-10-19T14:13:18Z
Hooking any cam to a laptop is not impossible just depends on what inputs you currently have on the laptop. There are even some high end, less expensive webcams you could use for the job that primarily hook in through the USB port.

A mini dv cam (for example) uses a firewire cable...out from cam>in to laptop.
