I'd like to hear from people that have one why they like the one they use. --How is the sound? --Does it take a mic? --Any issues with importing the video into FCP? --Is the camera too shaky? --What lens do you like best? --Anything else I should look for when I buy one?
http://videowtf.com/questions/722/mathalicious-great-math-terrible-video/724#724 Answer by jaydedman for Mathalicious: great math, terrible video jaydedman 2010-01-17T17:46:18Z 2010-01-17T17:46:18Z
How are you doing animations now? Maybe if you explain your production workflow, we can help suggest improvements. As Limbus said, the videos look good now.

I would use Motion for animation if you are editing with Final Cut Pro since it's built in.

Also, what kind of animations do you want to make that you can't make now?
http://videowtf.com/questions/415/cheap-lighting-for-videoblogs Cheap lighting for videoblogs jaydedman 2009-10-16T21:13:47Z 2009-12-23T19:27:06Z
I always see questions about lighting set ups for no-budget videoblogs. For my own work, we always go with natural light. I find good cameras today do fine with regular light.

I have seen this tutorial: http://www.etsy.com/storque/how-to/getting-started-in-video-lighting-1870/

Has anyone had luck with LED lights? Or a cheap setup that work for you?
http://videowtf.com/questions/616/fcp-willing-to-pay-for-timely-accurate-answers/639#639 Answer by jaydedman for FCP - willing to pay for timely accurate answers jaydedman 2009-11-24T15:05:08Z 2009-11-24T15:05:08Z
I dont know of a site that you pay for customized answers, but all urban areas have FCP workshops you can pay to attend. Usually small classes with an instructor. She/he could answer all your specific questions.
http://videowtf.com/questions/633/looking-for-creative-commons-moving-background-video-animation/638#638 Answer by jaydedman for Looking for Creative Commons Moving Background Video/Animation? jaydedman 2009-11-24T15:00:46Z 2009-11-24T15:00:46Z
I don't know of any specific site that specializes in CC-licensed animation. It's a really good idea though. Never thought of this before. Maybe its a site that needs to get made.
http://videowtf.com/questions/634/spiking-audio-in-imovie-09/637#637 Answer by jaydedman for Spiking audio in iMovie 09 jaydedman 2009-11-24T14:58:16Z 2009-11-24T14:58:16Z
You should be able to bring the audio down but not sure how exactly in iMovie 09. I'd check the iMovie forums.

Sounds like you know what you're doing so you probably know that it's almost impossible to fix really poor audio. It's unfortunate.
http://videowtf.com/questions/635/will-i-loose-quality-with-my-simple-editing-setup/636#636 Answer by jaydedman for will i loose quality with my simple editing setup? jaydedman 2009-11-24T14:56:05Z 2009-11-24T14:56:05Z
The only real answer is to try this process, then judge if youve lost too much quality. For the most part, there will always be some loss in any process. But if you're starting with video from the HV40, you are are starting with excellent quality that can take some loss.

Sometimes people are disappointed with the final version thinking it's compression problems. However Ive seen examples where people simply have shot the video poorly to begin with. They shoot in really low light and use bad sound. The better your image going in, the better coming out.

Ive never used the process you discuss, but you can make anything work with experimentation. Try it out and post a link here so we can comment further.
http://videowtf.com/questions/544/budget-profit-comparables-for-web-series/558#558 Answer by jaydedman for Budget/Profit Comparables for Web Series jaydedman 2009-11-06T14:08:11Z 2009-11-06T14:08:11Z
I believe that you're instinct is correct. No one's going to publish the budgets for their own productions, especially if they are more high-end. In TV, this kind of data gets passed around behind the scenes as people move from different productions.

As far as costs for a web series, you can imagine that the biggest costs is labor/talent. The equipment and distribution is minimal and easy to figure out. So imagine who you'd want to hire, and be realistic about what they need to be paid.

As far as profits go, I hear wild exaggerations of how much web shows make. I bet that most series lose money, or at best break even since advertising/sponsorships for online video is so premature.

If you could extrapolate how many people would come to your website, you might be able to guess how much you could make from Google ads.

It's the wild west.
http://videowtf.com/questions/552/major-issues-with-adobe-premiere-pro-cs4-under-snow-leopard/557#557 Answer by jaydedman for Major Issues with Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 under Snow Leopard jaydedman 2009-11-06T14:01:45Z 2009-11-06T14:01:45Z
Sounds like you are on the bleeding edge here doing everyone else's research with Premiere and Snow Leopard.

Before I wiped my drive, reinstalled, etc....I would experiment on another computer that wasn't as important as my main computer. Maybe in the office there's a computer no one uses much, and could more easily be wiped. It's a whole day reinstalling all the software I use on my main laptop.
http://videowtf.com/questions/551/bidding-on-a-video-project/556#556 Answer by jaydedman for Bidding on a Video Project jaydedman 2009-11-06T13:55:43Z 2009-11-06T13:55:43Z
Good question. What I do is ask the client to send me a short explanation of what they want. For example, "I want a 3 minute video documenting this event on Saturday."

This then lets me ask all kinds of questions to get a sense of how much work it'll take, and to better understand the style of video. How long is the event? How many people do I think I'll interview? Should it be a fun or serious video?

All this information usually comes across during a brief phone call. I then write up a summary with a price quote.
http://videowtf.com/questions/420/settings-for-screencasting/421#421 Answer by jaydedman for Settings for Screencasting jaydedman 2009-10-17T23:19:39Z 2009-10-17T23:19:39Z
I don't have the exact answer, but Michael Verdi at http://talkbot.tv/ screencasts in Second Life. His works looks excellent so would probably have the answer for you. This sized format would fit perfectly on their tablet screen.

Just like when Apple put out specific video compression specs for the iPhone/iPod.
http://videowtf.com/questions/387/what-is-the-right-duration-for-a-video-show/391#391 Answer by jaydedman for What is the right duration for a video show? jaydedman 2009-10-15T14:09:22Z 2009-10-15T14:09:22Z
Like any kind of media, it's all about the quality. There are books that I wish were 1000 pages long. I wish the Sopranos was 22 seasons.

But there are also videos that I can't stand for 10 seconds. They can't be short enough.

What "web show" producers often do is minimize any problems. For example, they make the video flashy, fast, and bubbly. In this way you don't lose people because no single moment ever feels slow. But at the same time, I often feel I didn't gain anything from this kind of video even if I never felt "bored". Also remember that many "web shows" are just mimicking TV, figuring out where to insert ads into their programs.

As you mentioned, I can watch a 30-minute video online if it's interesting. And most likely, what I like...you may not like...so we must remember that it's about specific tastes and niches. That's the beauty of the web.

A longer video also means a bigger download, but I think these days many people can handle 75mb downloads. There is a time coming too when most people's TV monitors will be hooked up to the web...so they can watch your video from their couch instead of on a small computer monitor.

Have fun and make videos you like.
http://videowtf.com/questions/385/will-not-search/389#389 Answer by jaydedman for Will not search jaydedman 2009-10-15T13:59:56Z 2009-10-15T13:59:56Z
I would go directly to the Miro help site: http://www.getmiro.com/using-miro/help/. You'll more likely find people there who know Miro in great detail.
http://videowtf.com/questions/347/where-to-get-source-material-for-video-remixes/359#359 Answer by jaydedman for Where to Get Source Material for Video Remixes jaydedman 2009-10-14T00:53:26Z 2009-10-14T00:53:26Z
RebelliousPixels is right on. "Fair use" is a powerful argument for remixing popular culture. It's an important legal precedent so citizens can use media for satire, commentary, and debate.

Though as Shely says, "Fair Use" doesnt protect you from a huge corporation from suing you anyway. You would probably eventually win in court, but it would be a long process. Usually media companies simply send you a "cease and desist" letter. Court cases seem to happen if you choose to fight. But remember, I am not a lawyer.

All this being said, I have a good friend who remixes exercise videos. He finds old VHS tapes at yard sales, digitizes the VHS tapes, then makes fun videos from the crazy exercise craze.

Check out all Aaron's remix work at http://work.aaronvaldez.com/
http://videowtf.com/questions/354/video-wtf-needs-your-help/358#358 Answer by jaydedman for Video WTF Needs Your Help! jaydedman 2009-10-14T00:44:18Z 2009-10-14T00:44:18Z
newteevee.com comes to mind.
http://videowtf.com/questions/349/when-is-video-of-an-event-worthwhile/357#357 Answer by jaydedman for When is Video of an Event Worthwhile? jaydedman 2009-10-14T00:42:13Z 2009-10-14T00:42:13Z
There's no doubt that there's audio, photos, and video can each be used more effectively....but why limit yourself?

As you probably know, good sound is what makes a compelling video. If you videotape a lecture, it's very easy to pull out an MP3 of the talk. This way, you'll have a video and the audio from an event.

Especially if you're documenting a community, video can be so important. We organized Vloggercon back in 2006, and we recorded and posted all the video: http://www.vloggercon.com/?page_id=208

A million peole won;t watch these videos, but for our community...being able to see who we were just grows more valuable over time. it is INSANE for nonprofit and advocacy groups to not document their events with video.

These videos wont get a million views now, but they will be like gold to future activists who can learn from those who came before. Video has so much information that text, audio, and photos don't have alone.
http://videowtf.com/questions/326/the-share-with-a-friend-link-not-working-from-insdie-miro-player/331#331 Answer by jaydedman for The 'Share with a friend link not working' from insdie Miro player jaydedman 2009-10-11T13:51:20Z 2009-10-11T13:51:20Z
This is a weird link: https://www.miroguide.com/share/feed/?feed_url=http%3A//feeds.miroguide.com/miroguide/new

Have you tried to ask this on the Miro support forums? http://www.getmiro.com/using-miro/help/
http://videowtf.com/questions/328/off-topic-what-software-is-used-in-videowtf-is-it-open-source-is-is-public/330#330 Answer by jaydedman for [off-topic] What software is used in VideoWTF ? Then Zoom in. This will put the person into focus but the background will be blurry.

I love those shots in movies when there's a closeup of a person's face at night but the background is just abstract blurry lights. This is how you can do that.
http://videowtf.com/questions/293/lost-image-on-avi-file-from-flip-cam-sound-is-there-though/321#321 Answer by jaydedman for Lost image on AVI file from flip cam (sound is there though)? jaydedman 2009-10-11T00:04:19Z 2009-10-11T00:04:19Z
David Lee King and Ryanne are correct. When you plug in your Flip camera, it should have the specific codec software on the camera. Just click on the camera image and install this program. It'll then extend Quicktime to be able to read their proprietary codec.
http://videowtf.com/questions/297/increasing-the-number-of-views-a-video-gets-how/316#316 Answer by jaydedman for Increasing the number of views a video gets ( how ) ? jaydedman 2009-10-10T17:48:06Z 2009-10-10T17:48:06Z
Ethically, you would simply tag your videos with the appropriate subject matter in the video. The more tags the better. Be as far ranging as you can.

Unethically, it's common on Youtube to tag your videos with the most popular tags of the day. Like "Brittany Spears" or "tits". Eventhough your video has nothing to do with these tags, your videos will pop up when people search for these tags.
http://videowtf.com/questions/307/good-software-to-edit-and-cut-big-videos/315#315 Answer by jaydedman for Good software to edit and cut big videos jaydedman 2009-10-10T17:35:27Z 2009-10-10T17:35:27Z
mbrianmills is correct. That needs to be fact checked. That's fcuked if its true.
http://videowtf.com/questions/208/physical-splicing-minidv-cassette-tape/214#214 Answer by jaydedman for Physical splicing MiniDV cassette tape? jaydedman 2009-10-08T20:06:14Z 2009-10-08T20:06:14Z
I would first really make sure it's the tape...and that it really won't play. I'd try it in different cameras.

If it really is a bad tape, I'd think about how important the recording is. You could take it to a professional video house where the would charge you a lot of money to possibly re-record the video. Maybe. Plus expensive.

But if you assume its a lost tape, experiment. Ive never heard of anyone unspooling a miniDV tape onto another tape. If you culd do it, you'd be the expert on a site like this.
http://videowtf.com/questions/184/canon-gl2-vs-consumer-hd-camera/207#207 Answer by jaydedman for Canon GL2 vs. Consumer HD camera? jaydedman 2009-10-08T19:20:38Z 2009-10-08T19:20:38Z
Vu is right on the money. You do lose some of the manual controls that a more professional camera gives you, but the picture quality is much better. A much greater resolution.

The big problem is audio. The GLS/VX2100/etc all have ways to plug in multiple mics. The consumer HD cameras are smaller and more difficult to use XLR cables.
http://videowtf.com/questions/179/safest-option-for-embedding-html5-video-ie-display-flash-player-on-older-browser/199#199 Answer by jaydedman for Safest option for embedding html5 video (ie display flash player on older browsers)? jaydedman 2009-10-08T18:04:12Z 2009-10-08T18:04:12Z
This is still new territory, but this guy has brought together the most comprehensive fallback system: http://code.google.com/p/video4all/
http://videowtf.com/questions/408/best-way-to-post-a-60min-video/409#409 Comment by jaydedman jaydedman 2009-10-16T01:49:19Z 2009-10-16T01:49:19Z Internet archive is at archive.org. No limit there. As Ryanne said, blip.tv is a great place that has a very high limit and a smart player/embedcode choices. Your 30 minute video should not be bigger than 500mb anyway. Compress it a little more using the compressions settings at freevlog.org/learn http://videowtf.com/questions/402/whats-iframe-about/406#406 Comment by jaydedman jaydedman 2009-10-16T01:43:01Z 2009-10-16T01:43:01Z agreed. Like .mv4 which is the video codec tat automatically opens in iTunes. http://videowtf.com/questions/399/what-to-consider-when-shooting-in-hd/401#401 Comment by jaydedman jaydedman 2009-10-15T18:07:23Z 2009-10-15T18:07:23Z Pasteeater gives a good summary to make sure any video will look good. The big change in HD is the superior quality of the image. Just know that any blemishes and details will be seen. Older video was always fuzzy enough to hide these details. So old people look old. Smudges on walls look dirty. Just a reality. I don't necessarily think it's bad...just a shift in our thinking. http://videowtf.com/questions/170/on-a-fixed-budget-get-a-better-camera-or-a-mac/192#192 Comment by jaydedman jaydedman 2009-10-08T20:01:53Z 2009-10-08T20:01:53Z Douglas is right on the money. Buy a computer that you're comfortable with already. And as others have said, then buy a nice consumer HD camera and a GOOD MICROPHONE. That being said, you cannot beat editing on Final Cut Pro. Buying a used macbook might be about the same as a new PC. You'll certianly find a much more vibrant community of FCP users who can answer your questions.
