There is a very good tutorial how to turn an Ubuntu (or actually every Linux box) into a networked time machine server:

http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/

This should to the trick, additionally to hombrelobos advice on media server for linux.

thanks llmbus for this tutorial link. I continue to find hombrelobo's answer helpful, however, I'm switching and choosing your answer as the answer to my question because (while a little complicated for me) it is a Mac solution, which is what i've been looking for. – VIDinLA Nov 13 at 16:22
still, hombrelobo has the solution for mediaserver, while I only showed you how to make act this same server as time capsule. – lImbus Nov 16 at 19:52

You can use an old PC with linux for about USD 500 as a media server ..... not sure about the backup ... probably ...

Time Capsule is a decent backup system, but it's not meant for use as a server. If you plan to regularly access files, you can add additional hard drives to the device's USB port. You're probably better off just buying a network-attached hard drive enclosure and using that.

Not a genious but I have heard that the audio guys use ICECAST and the video folks use VIDEOLAN by the VLC project. I guess it is worth checking out. It is also cross platform and looks easy to set-up.

You can setup a cheap $200 dedicated server.

great price! looks like it makes quite an XBMC media center too: lifehacker.com/5391308/… something like this that would also work with my Mac's Time Machine would be amazing! As for streaming wirelessly, it'd be easy to add wifi, and for extra space, an external drive could easily be added via USB port. – VIDinLA Nov 16 at 15:02

well, why don't you think openly and try opensource RED5 media server, a very good alternative to FMS(adobe flash media server) . try to explore more on RED5, really good thing to try and the biggest thing about it is, it is OPEN-SOURCE. :)
