simple mobile video lifecasting in the field (on-the-street) in real-time with a DV cam calls for a mobile broadband provider capable, persistent, reliable and dependable for minimum upload rate of 200Kbps for 320x240 at 11 FPS with decent audio. EVDO frequently drops below that rate, causing loss of stream. Worse yet, SprintPCS EVDO is limited to 5GB per month before the usurious overcharges kick in.

How are you overcoming these issues?

Regrettably, you cannot overcome the above issues, but dodge them (a bit).

I lucked out and had a grandfathered in, no cap Spring EVDO card in 2008 that performed amazingly well. If you're life casting I imagine you're moving around which is causing the EVDO drops?

EVDO really isn't designed for moving around, Jay's right: you will likely be better off with 3G as the hand off between towers is designed for this sort of thing. EVDO shouldn't be dropping below 200kpbs at a particular location though - unless I was in an old building, I would usually get 300-500kpbs across the country. If you're not breaking 200kpbs, speak to your provider.

Alternatively, save up your $$$ and wait for 4G/WiMax implementation to come to your location and then drop it on some new devices that will handle the bandwidth necessary. Even with 3G (and I speak with a lot of experience in this regard) you will constantly get FPS in single digits and dropped connections. Also, you'll run up your bill very quickly.

If this is urgent, I would not chose the iPhone option - go with a Nokia that can do 3.5G - again, that's a pretty penny. I say wait this generation out then go whole hog on the next.

I would get away from a video cam,era plugged into a laptop that broadcasts through an EVDO card.

A simpler way is to use qik.com on an iPhone, Nokia, or Android phone. Video streaming seems much more doable on the 3G network.

Not that simple and not that cheap, but livestream has a "satellite truck in a backpack" they rent: http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/30/livestream-livepack-a-satellite-television-truck-in-a-backpack/
