Anyone gone down the DIY road of making your own softbox light? Lowel Rifa and Chimera softboxes are expensive. I'd love to make my own.

DIY site Instructibles has a couple of different softbox projects, like this one: http://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Fabric-Softbox-14x56-Strip/. Even if none fit your exact needs, they can be a starting point for your own project.

I just paid under $100 apiece for three large fluorescent light boxes, including stands, bulbs and shipping. And one of them is a boom configuration. I'm not sure I could make one for $100, figuring time and materials. These aren't heavy duty, but they get the job done for my needs.

Didn't know they ran that cheap. Curious, what brand are they and where might I find them? – ekai Oct 8 at 20:40

Knowing the level you're shooting for this probably isn't helpful, but when I do stop-motion or studio lighting I just use 250 watt bulbs in plain old reflector floods and clothespin some parchment paper across the front. Just make sure the bulb doesn't touch the paper or it'll start smoking eventually.

I use these: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/308802-REG/Impact_401483_Tungsten_One_Flood_Light.html
