For capturing demo videos and drawings I have used paid screencast software, but am wondering if there's anything good out there that's free.

Check out Jing, it's pretty good and can host your screencasts on screencast.com

Mac OS X Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) has QuickTime version 10. The File Menu has a new option for "New Screen Recording".

Check out Camtasia Studio from TechSmith.

For an example of Camtasia in use, check out the following sites.

  • Fog Creek Copilot Demo**
  • FogBugz Demo**

Works on Mac and Windows.

** Note: I would've posted inline links for those two examples, but since I'm a new user on this site, it only would let me post one link. Just Google for those phrases to see a demo.

For free on Snow Leopard as Doulster says is the latest version of QuickTime version 10. I have used it and can comfirm it works.

But it will not replace ScreenFlow which I use a lot. I am testing the beta version 2 right now and it is impressive, with many added tools. The transitions work well as does the direct upload to YouTube.

Don't know when it will be out but I think it could be soon.
