When using my Rode Video Mic on my new Canon HF200, I'm getting a hissing noise in the audio tracks. I actually tried a different mic to rule out my Rode, and got the same result. Does anyone know what's causing this? The camera itself has no internal moving parts, so it's not coming from the camera. So far, the only thing I've been able to find online is it might be that the mic is mono and the camera is recording in stereo? I used Audacity to remove the noise, but this is driving me crazy. The quality of the image I'm getting from the camera is great, but I might have to return it if this is a problem inherent to the HF200. Any ideas on what's causing this and how to solve it?

I'm not sure what your problem could be, but since you've tried multiple mics it's obviously not the microphone.

How bad is the hissing? It's totally possible that you just got a bad camera. I doubt it's inherent in the design of that model of camera, most likely you just caught a lemon. Take it back and exchange it and if that doesn't fix it then buy a different model.

The HF cameras are great and I've worked with 2 of them with no issues with audio whatsoever. Sometimes we just aren't very lucky.

How is the sound from the internal mic?

Oh and you don't have to worry about the mic being mono and the camera being stereo, that won't cause the issues you are experiencing. In fact it won't cause issues at all.

The internal mic is fine..., it's just when I connect an external mic. I can record clean audio using the mic if I plug it directly into my computer - so it's not the mic. – Chris Oct 26 at 21:41
I was able to manually adjust the mic levels on the camera and have been getting better results. I still haven't tested it in a real world setting yet, but these quick tests are encouraging. – Chris Oct 27 at 20:25
I would really suggest swapping it out for a new camera. Hope it's still within the return period or you'll have to go through warranty. – Vu Bui Oct 31 at 18:08

Shot in the dark here, but...

If you are hearing the hiss through external headphones, then you probably need to change the settings for the Ext Headphone Jack. It's a dual-purpose jack, for either A/V or audio only. If you use headphones without changing from the default settings, you will definitely hear a buzz, esp. on the right channel. The setting is changed in your menu; see pg 79 of user manual for detailed instructions.

I was able to solve the problem myself.

Apparently, the automatic setting for the microphone is very sensitive. I switched the setting to manual, then lowered the mic volume to about halfway between the far left and the center marks - basically 1/4 sensitivity. Now everything sounds great - and no hissing.

this is kind of an aside, but how did you remove the hissing noise in audacity? is there a filter that worked well? i'm always trying to remove audio like that and never know which filters to use in FCP

hey. I guess that the problem is that your microphone is mono and the external mic jack is stereo.

This causes one of the channels (either Left of Right) to capture the sound well, but the other side gets interference.

What you can do is to use earphones and check what is going on. If my theory is correct, what you may need is just a plug that will convert your microphone from mono to stereo.

For the videos you already made it will be more tricky: you need to use an editing software to split left and right, delete the side that has the hissing and then convert your video to mono using the good sound as the base.

I am currently looking for a good wireless microphone. Would appreciate your advice.

Now, I have a regular Philips wireless. The problem is that I need to have an energy source available to connect the base of the wireless to the camcorder, which renders it mostly useless on street videos. It is quite good for indoors without movement, but still not the best choice for mobility...

I am having the same problem - hissing with an external mic. Can I ask if anyone came to a solution for this?

I'm not sure if the mono-stereo adaptor will fix it because when I listen on headphones I can hear both the recording and the hissing in one channel.

Any help would be great.
