As the family geek, some relatives have asked me to recommend a camcorder for them. As they are not particularly tech-savvy, I'm looking for one that will take care of as much of the settings, focusing, light levels etc. as possible.

I think HD support would be ideal, and a simple interface for archiving content to the PC would be a bonus.

As this will be a device for occasional use, the budget is pretty low, around GBP150-250 (around $250-$400).

Any that fit the bill?

Whew, there are so many ways to answer that... I'm surprised this query has been "empty" for so long. I would recommend one of the Flip cameras or a Kodak Zi8 but I would make sure that your relatives go to a store and try them out, hands and eyes on, and make the actual choice.

On the other hand, I have seen people who are not particularly tech-savvy really take to shooting video with a point and shoot Canon.

I don't know the work-flow on the PC, but on the Mac the videos can go right into iPhoto along with their stills.

My own experience with these situations, though, is to give advice but make sure that your relatives try the cameras out at a Best Buy, etc. That way they will "own" the decision and they will be more motivated to learn how to use the camera than if they feel it was urged on them by the family expert. Note: I did not use the term "geek". I hate that word. Comes from a disgusting side-show act.

Good luck!
